Each program is built around one or a few themes relevant to the local community. In planning, we work closely with all key stakeholders on site – whether it’s the district administration, neighborhood initiatives, community management, urban planning offices, or municipal housing associations.

Usually, we start with a main partner. From there, we engage in dialogue with other stakeholders and local residents to define the core themes and first content ideas. Finally, we bring along our own toolkit of methods with formats tailored to different target groups.

That depends on the local conditions, and we adjust accordingly. With our container, we usually stay at a location for several weeks. We offer programs at selected times rather than every day. The same applies when we temporarily use existing indoor spaces.   Our cargo bike allows us to drop by for single days and stay flexible. Often, it makes sense to combine the bike and container in different phases of a location. For example, we might first get to know the neighborhood with the bike for a few days, before returning later in the year with the container.
Each location is planned individually.

• Participation processes:
  Often, our locations are linked to urban participation processes. After each location, we process the results from the various formats in a way that best supports ongoing planning.

• Kiezlog: 
  Even when no direct participation process is involved, we document the outcomes in our Kiezlog. This way, they remain accessible to all partners and local residents.

• Structures:
  During our time on site, we want to equip people with new ways to get involved in their community. We connect active stakeholders and encourage those who haven’t yet found a way to participate.

That depends on whether we come with our container, our cargo bike, or just our toolkit of methods. You’ll find a detailed overview of infrastructure, technology, and methods  here. Depending on the theme and target group, we also bring along suitable participation formats or exhibits.

Yes, members of our extended team are always present on site as contact persons. Program content provided by partners is coordinated with them. In most cases, it makes sense – and is often necessary – for partners to also be present, especially for workshops or information stands.

No. The Kiezlabor is an initiative of the Smart City and Digital Strategy Gemeinsam Digital: Berlin and is implemented by CityLAB Berlin on behalf of the Berlin Senate Chancellery. The Kiezlabor is funded through CityLAB project funding by the Senate Chancellery.
